Book Review: I Will Teach You to Be Rich Chapter 1

This year I've been more focused on our finances. I'd love to be financially free one day with zero debt so I've been trying to soak in and learn as much as I can from different authors. Not all of them I agree with on everything or love but I will say, I've learned something from all of them.

You can find I Will Teach You to Be Rich on Amazon for fairly cheap Under $11 at the time or buy second hand on eBay. If you haven't read the book, this is one that I do recommend.

In the first chapter, Ramit covers optimizing your credit cards. I've had rewards cards before, when I didn't pay them off each month and we found ourselves in a whole lot of trouble. Long story short, we stopped using them. Our situation these days is a bit different so I decided to explore some options.

We already had the Amex gold card for Skymiles and a Prime card. When I first started using the Prime card, it was 3%. After adding it back to my wallet, the rewards is now 5% so that was a perk.

After some major research, there were two cards that stood out to me.

OnePay CashRewards card - this one gives you 5% back at WalMart (groceries and fuel) so it was a no brainer because we shop there and fuel up. There was even a 3500 bonus point reward when you sign up. I know, a lot of people are against Walmart but when it saves us money and time on doing pickup orders, I'm OK with it. We do get most of our produce and meat elsewhere.

The second card we ended up picking was a Fidelity Signature Rewards. It gives you 2% back on most other purchases. Rewards can be deposited into an account of an investment account which is amazing because it's automatically done.

The biggest perks are the money back. You're already spending the money and as long as you pay off your cards every month, why not get some rewards back!
